Genesis 2:2  And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he
rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done.

Last night during youth group, one youth asked a very deep question:  Why did God rest on the 7th day?

  2. Because pausing to contemplate and enjoy the magnificence of creation is as important as doing the work needed to care for it?

  4. In the Old Testament, Sabbath rest is such an important commandment, because it is the practice that enables one to know the meaning of one’s existence. It is not just to rest so you can get back out there and get drained again. To rest on the Sabbath is to remember who led you out of the Wilderness. It is to contemplate the grace and abundance of God. It is to find one’s place in the scheme of things. And, perhaps God rests to model for us how important it is – to enjoy, to delight, to “taste and see” the goodness that is God.

Heschel called Sabbath “a cathedral in time.” It’s the time not just to rest, to to find…zest, in God. It is the pause that makes work meaningful.

  6. It is a metaphor for the life of a man. A lifespan is 70 years. But in the last decade you rest and contemplate the fruit of your labors. If you are godly, you will look back and say “it is good. it is all very good” A life well lived.
