{"id":1455,"date":"2015-01-11T15:26:04","date_gmt":"2015-01-11T20:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marktime.org\/?p=1455"},"modified":"2015-01-11T15:26:36","modified_gmt":"2015-01-11T20:26:36","slug":"open-letter-regarding-pcusa-2015-one-great-hour-of-sharing-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marktime.org\/?p=1455","title":{"rendered":"Open Letter regarding PCUSA 2015 One Great Hour of Sharing materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Linda Valentine,<\/p>\n<p>I am very concerned about the posters for the 2015 One Great Hour of Sharing campaign that were highlighted in the December 3 PNS story:\u00a0 https:\/\/www.pcusa.org\/news\/2014\/12\/3\/special-offerings-take-new-look\/\u00a0 I find that these posters are quite offensive towards two groups that I minister to &#8211; those with addiction issues and people of color.<\/p>\n<p>I am a Candidate for ordination and I am currently serving as the Resident Chaplain for the Capital Health hospital in Trenton, NJ.\u00a0 Our hospital is an urban trauma center and is also the designated mental health in-patient crisis center for the county.\u00a0 My particular floors include the trauma ICU and the in-patient mental health unit.<\/p>\n<p>On both floors I work with patients suffering from addiction.\u00a0 Some are victims of violence as a result of their addiction and are in the ICU.\u00a0 Others are suffering from mental health issues including and related to their addiction.\u00a0 Other patients are in the ICU because they have literally drunk or drugged themselves to death.<\/p>\n<p>Those patients who survive and who will be released into the community generally express a desire to avoid the substance that they are addicted to.\u00a0 They want to stay clean.\u00a0 Those who come from a Christian background speak of needing God&#8217;s help to overcome their addiction.\u00a0 I often recommend that these people connect with a church &#8211; either with the pastor or with the groups (AA, NA, Al-Anon, etc) that use the building.\u00a0 On learning that I am Presbyterian, these people often express interest in getting help from a Presbyterian church.\u00a0 In our area, there are many.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marktime.org\/?attachment_id=1456\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1456\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1456\" src=\"https:\/\/marktime.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/34323-232x300.png\" alt=\"34323\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marktime.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/34323-232x300.png 232w, https:\/\/marktime.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/34323.png 784w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/a>I would be horrified if any of these children of God that I spoke with walked into one of our churches and saw one of these posters.\u00a0 Instead of the church providing a place of refuge for them, the church would reinforce the stigma that they already feel.\u00a0 These ironic &#8220;jokes&#8221; aimed at addictions might be enough to send those church attenders with mental health issues back into the hospital.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"na15160cb\">Then the word brutiful started making sense  <a href=\"http:\/\/mouthsofthesouth.com\/locations\/personal-property-jack-chrismon-cathy-royster-chrismon-and-the-late-dr-dan-virgina-royster\/\">sildenafil generic cheap<\/a> to me, and I was getting the idea.
